Hey guys!

Today on YouTube I have posted a video on how to load a medium format camera. I know many photographers who, like myself, learned with film such as with a 35mm camera but who now shoot primarily digitally.

There is something very rewarding and very raw about using film. Which is why I want to share the first steps with you for when you get your first medium format camera. I encourage everyone who wants to be a professional photographer to use film, at least at some point, as it will only enhance your craft.

I love using medium format and I think once you experience it, you will too!

Here are the first steps on your journey to medium format!

You can see the video here:

Here is the step by step guide that I speak about in the video for reference.

  • Place the empty spool in the spool slot.
  • Unfold the film flap and place it in the film slot.
  • Wrap the film behind the plate and put the top of the flap through the empty spool.
  • Tightly begin to wrap the film roll around the spool until you see the start line appear on the film roll and it lines up with the arrows.
  • Remove the metal plate from the center of the camera between the camera body and the loading department.
  • Place the entire canister back into the camera with the numbers facing you. For example, so you can read the 645 looking at the camera and not upside down.
  • Place the metal plate in the back slot of the loading department so that it is not in between the camera and loading department anymore and you are ready to shoot!
  • Note: You can put this back in front of the loading department when you do not wish to shoot at anytime.

Camera: Mamiya 645

Film: Kodak Portra 800

You may say that Tami and Phil should have met years prior to when they did but this is the perfect example of meeting the right person at the right time. Tami and Phil not only had many friends in common (unknown to them at the time), went to rival schools in Arizona and both grew up nearby one another but did not actually come into contact until they met on the dating app, Hinge.  On their first date, Tami had gotten out of the car and slipped on the uneven ground. She didn’t get hurt though because Phil was there to catch her. This was the first of many moments that Tami knew she had found a keeper.
Then came Thanksgiving weekend, 2015. Tami had spent her childhood at sleep away camp in Malibu and had been reminiscing to Phil about her time there and how much she had wanted to show him where she spent one of her favorite childhood memories. They went to Malibu Seafood and Phil suggested they go to the top of the hill where her camp was. At this camp is a chapel with spectacular ocean views. When they got there, Tami leaned in to kiss him and he dropped to one knee and asked her to spend the rest of her life with him.
They went to visit her twin sister, Lauren who is also her business partner for celebratory drinks. Did I mention Tami and Lauren have an incredible event planning and interior design business? Tami didn’t know this but Lauren had been at her house to pack her bags as Phil had planned an amazing romantic weekend at the Ojai Valley Inn and Spa.  When they met Lauren, the surprise was out and Tami and Phil departed to Ojai where they would spend the weekend sipping champagne and celebrating their engagement.
As an event coordinator herself and as a bride, Tami and her sister took on planning her wedding. She wanted her vision to come to life not only as a bride, but as a wedding planner. Needless to say, this wedding was her baby. Her company, Side By Side Design, brought her vision to life and may I add, wow! What an impressive site it was. Take a look for yourself at their glamorous Hollywood wedding!
Thank you for allowing me to capture your special day Tami and Phil!

Do you often find yourself asking, how do I become a fearless entrepreneur? If so, this post is for you! I want to share 3 tips with you fro being a fearless entrepreneur in hopes to help you find your start, your footing and to finally begin to make your dreams come to life.

Here are my three tips for being a fearless entrepreneur and to grow your business!

Step one: Lay the groundwork. It is all too easy to jump in head first and then drown in the overwhelming workload. Take your time and don’t try to rush to the top. If you take a break from the work that you are struggling to swim in and take a step back to plan your businesses baseline, you will find yourself less buried and more capable of running your business more efficiently.

From your financials to your vision, you need a clear, practical and organized system running throughout your business. You need to know your expenditures, income and costs. On the same note, have a clear image of where you want your brand to be and how you want to grow your brand.

Which leads me to step two…

Step Two: Evolve your brand. To simplify this, I will go off of my own experience. When I started, I saw myself being at a certain place (you know, super successful and all that?) but I had no idea how to grow my brand to get there. I spent time and money growing a rather subpar version of what I really wanted. If I could stress one thing, it would be to take the time to envision your brand and to start off from the beginning, on growing that vision. It may take time and money but if you’re patient and stick to your vision, it will grow more organically and evolve into what you want. Rather than into something you sort of kind of like and then having to re-brand yourself again later.

Step Three: This is my third piece of essential advice for being a fearless entrepreneur. You will not succeed without taking risks. This does not mean taking on risks that could potentially affect your livelihood. In fact, I strongly encourage you to avoid those types of risks. However, without taking some risk you will never grow your business into something more than what may feel safe.Your ideas and dreams won’t reach their potential if you’re not willing to take some leaps of faith and believe in yourself enough to be a little risky.

You must put enough faith in yourself and in your ideas to make sure they flourish. If you do not believe in yourself and in your product, no one ever will.

As scary as it may seem at times to take these risks, if you want to achieve your goals, you have to be fearless. That is not to say throw caution to the wind but to find the balance that is right for you and above all, to believe in yourself.

I hope this helps you become a bit more fearless in your venture as a fellow entrepreneur.
