Business and Bike Riding

Being a business owner is a lot like learning to ride a bike. You get up, you fall down. You get up again and you get going with speed and then inevitably fall a few more times. However, once you master it, it is pretty certain that you won’t continue to fall except for within circumstances that are out of your control.

I cannot tell you how many times I have had the proverbial marks from falling down multiple times while getting my business to where it currently is. The amount of times I felt like a failure are honestly something I could not count.

Now, my business has grown into something I would have never thought possible with having expanded throughout California and Colorado.

Just like when you learn to ride a bike, having someone help you, hey, even training wheels can set you off in the right direction. One of the most valuable lessons I learned was that asking for help and guidance is not only key to having success but it sets you on a path of stability.

Don’t be afraid my friends! The next time you feel at a loss or like you’re just not in control of your business, ask for help. Get some training, get support and most importantly, believe in YOUR capabilities. That is when you will master your craft, your business and really start to take off.

How to Get your Work Published

Hey fellow photographers! I wanted to do a post today on getting your work published and share my insights that have helped me get published in many distinguished blogs and magazines.

It can be intimidating to submit your work and this is especially true after you have received rejection after rejection. Let’s be honest, it can become a bit disheartening. The one thing you have to remember is to not give up and to keep trying. Here are a few pointers to help you get there….

First, make sure that the work you are submitting fits into the blog or magazine’s brand. This is key. I have photographed many weddings with different aesthetics and with all of the different styles of magazines and blogs, I always make sure that I carefully curate each wedding to fit in a certain aesthetic for whichever blog I am choosing to submit to during my post-work editing.

I will also keep in mind how I shoot. If there is a wedding that I think may fit into Green Wedding Shoes, Style Me Pretty or The Knot, I will pay attention to how I shoot the details of the wedding for these publications.

It is also important to introduce yourself. Leave a little note for the editor, let yourself be known. Publications get thousands among thousands of submissions each month, if not each week. What makes you stand out amongst the other photographers submitting their work?  You cannot simply rely on your work when there are so many other talented photographers out there doing the same. You have to reach out and make a connection.

Be consistent in your brand. The more you get published, then these magazines will begin to know your style. It is important to be consistent but most importantly, to be true to your own photographic voice and not try to change your work to fit another brand or publications style. Be true to you and your work and you can go very far my friends!

Lastly, you need to believe in yourself if you want others to believe in you. Know your worth and acknowledge your talent and others will do the same.

I hope you have found this helpful and that you have a success the next time you submit your work!

Life is Beautiful

Life is a mixture of things both good and bad. It is often filled with sadness, hardship, loss and an abundance of other negative experiences that can make it hard sometimes to push through and see the light at the end of the tunnel.

However, life is also filled with an abundance of amazing things such as, laughter, love, friends, family, gratitude and blissful moments.

My tagline, “Life Is Beautiful” came to me because of all of the above. Even through the difficulties that life throws at you, it is nonetheless beautiful.

This is what drew me to photography, because documenting life and telling the stories that people have to share, in a visual narrative, is something that I think is a wonderful thing.

I have always had a childish sense of wonderment and a thirst for adventure and I prefer to document the more positive aspects of life. Through my travels and through my photography, I have been able to document the beauty that this world beholds. This fills me with happiness on a daily basis.

The sole reason I am a photographer, is to see the beauty. Being constantly captivated by our world.

Life is beautiful. Go capture the beauty and never let go.

The Importance of Teamwork

If someone were to ask me, “What is the one thing that has helped you get to where you are now?” my response would be an easy one, teamwork.

All too often, we take on more than we can handle as entrepreneurs. We wear ALL the hats, we work crazy hours and most of the time, it is incredibly hard for us to give up control. My business is my baby, it is my passion. I have put so much time into growing my brand, so many tears into it, so many ups and downs and still, it fills me up and gives me a purpose that I never thought possible. However, when it comes to letting others in and trusting another person with these responsibilities, it has always made me feel uneasy. That was at least until last October, when I found Kate!

Not very long ago, I read a blog by the incredible Jenna Kutcher. This blog changed my life and my business. She wrote a blog on how she hired a virtual assistant and as soon as I read it, I knew what I had to do and I knew what my business needed and that was having a reliable team.

I immediately reached out to her VA, Caitlyn Jeffery. Caitlyn thankfully took me on as a client and this is when the paradigm of when my business shifted into more than I could have ever hoped for.

Eventually, Caitlyn split off to work exclusively with Jenna and Caitlyn’s business partner, Kate Quin, took over the business. Kate and I have been working together for many months now. She has become such an integral part of how I run my business and in helping it grow and run smoothly. She is my right hand gal and I feel so incredibly fortunate to have her beside me as I grow The Argus Image.

There are not enough ways to express my gratitude for Kate. She has worked day in and day out with me to get my business where I have always wanted it to be. The best part? I FINALLY have time to pursue the aspects of photography I have been trying to break into for years. Not only that, I finally have that work-life balance I have been longing for… for such a long time.

You know that feeling, the one you hear people talking about, when everything is in order, when you can breath and feel relaxed? No? Yeah, I didn’t either until Kate came into my life.

Currently, I am in Iceland. Since I have been away, I have had Kate be in control of The Argus Image. It has been such a relief to know my business is in good hands and that I do not have to worry, get distracted and that I can actually enjoy my time away from home.

For so long I would have this feeling that if I took a rest period, or time for myself, that it would all fall apart. I cannot tell you what a relief it has been to have someone take on these challenges for me and to know without a doubt, that I always have someone looking out for my business. Plus, she is a rockin’ girlboss as well and she gets it. She knows the struggle and she understands better than anyone what it takes!

So, fellow entrepreneurs, if you have been finding yourself feeling overwhelmed, overworked and in need of help, I encourage you to hire yourself a virtual assistant or someone who can help you and be your backbone while you focus on other things. You know, like the actual work you’re passionate about!
